The Po Delta is the largest wetland in Italy and one of the most important in Europe. With its 52,000 hectares, it is an ecosystem of great biodiversity recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.
Here, the Great River, as the Po is affectionately called, ends its journey of over 650 km, splitting into numerous branches before delivering its waters to the Adriatic Sea.
This particular geographical shape has created a unique environment, where the following coexist:
- Valli da pesca, artificial ecosystems created by man for fish farming
- Inlets and lagoons, where the fresh water of the river meets the salt water of the sea
- Sandbanks, strips of sand that protect the lagoons from the erosive action of the sea
- Floodplains, areas that are periodically submerged during floods
- Salt marshes, small islands that emerge only during low tide
Just 70 km from Venice, the Delta is an oasis of peace and nature, ideal for those looking for a real experience, far from mass tourism.
