Elegant and unmistakable with their pink plumage and long, thin legs, flamingos are one of the most fascinating natural sights in the Po Delta. Their seasonal arrival has become a real event in recent years. It draws birdwatchers, nature photographers and curious visitors from all over Italy and abroad.

A recent phenomenon: the history of flamingos in the Delta

Flamingos are a relatively recent sight in the Po Delta. Sporadic sightings were documented back in the 1980s. But it's only in the last decade that these beautiful birds have started visiting the area regularly, forming larger and larger colonies.

Several factors have helped this phenomenon:

  • Climate change: rising temperatures have made the Delta a more welcoming habitat for birds traditionally linked to warmer climates
  • Habitat protection: conservation work and the creation of protected areas have improved the quality of the Delta's wetlands
  • Food availability: the lagoons and fishing valleys offer a plentiful food source
  • Population growth: flamingo numbers have increased across the Mediterranean

The pink flamingo: ID card of an extraordinary bird

The flamingo we see in the Delta belongs to the Phoenicopterus roseus species. It is commonly known as the greater flamingo, the largest of the six flamingo types in the world.

Distinctive features

  • Size: up to 150 cm tall, wingspan up to 165 cm
  • Weight: 2-4 kg, with males slightly larger than females
  • Plumage: pinkish in adults, greyer in young birds
  • Beak: distinctive, curved and adapted to their specific way of feeding
  • Lifespan: they can live over 40 years in the wild

"Their distinctive pink colour comes from pigments in the algae and small crustaceans they eat. Nature paints these magnificent birds with the colours of a Delta sunset."

Seasonality: when to see flamingos in the Delta

Flamingos aren't in the Delta in the same numbers all year round. Their presence follows clear seasonal cycles. These are influenced by environmental factors, food availability and breeding cycles.

Sighting calendar

  • Spring (March-May): Arrival of the first colonies, ideal for watching courtship behaviour
  • Summer (June-August): Steady but smaller presence, concentrated in the cooler hours
  • Autumn (September-November): Peak presence, with colonies of hundreds of birds
  • Winter (December-February): Sporadic presence, limited to milder winters

The best viewing spots

The Po Delta offers many prime spots for flamingo watching. Each has specific features that suit different types of visitors and weather conditions.

Sacca degli Scardovari

The most famous and accessible viewing spot, easily reached by car. The farming structures for the Cozza di Scardovari PDO mussel create an ideal feeding environment for flamingos.

Valle Bagliona

A traditional fishing valley that offers a perfect habitat for many water bird species. Access is regulated and requires permission from the Park authorities.

Foce del Po di Maistra

The meeting point of fresh and salt water, particularly striking at sunset. Reached via nature trails that let you fully experience the Delta's nature.
